The 25th Mallerstang Horseshoe & Nine Standards Yomp
The Rotary Club of Upper Eden wishes to thank all who took part in the 2007 Yomp and those who helped with the planning and delivery of the event.
The Rotary Club of Upper Eden hosted a Presentation Evening at the Black Bull Inn Nateby on Tuesday 10th July when the bulk of the funds raised at this year’s Mallerstang & Nine Standards Yomp were donated to the selected Charities. Cheques for a total of £3,750 were presented to the three main beneficiaries, Barnado’s UK, Eden Valley Children’s Hospice and Thandi Friends Village project in South Africa. Other donations totalling £650 were made to Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue, the Air Training Corps and St John’s who all provided valuable assistance on Yomp day helping to ensure the safety of the Yompers and our helpers.
President Philip Jones paid tribute to the partners of Rotarians and all of the helpers who turned out on the day to make it such a success. He mentioned that in total there were almost 100 people manning checkpoints, working in the Start/Finish points and serving refreshments for the over 500 returning Yompers. He said that overall it was estimated that the Yomp enables entrants to raise in the order of £15,000 of which approximately one third came in to the Rotary Club’s Charity funds and the balance went to the Yompers own selected charitable causes.
Also present for the evening were Mr Gordon Handley of T R Handley & Sons of Crosby Garrett and Mr Roland Bowman of Cumbria Kendal Scaffolding, the two main sponsors of this years event.
Annette Varcoe was accompanied by her friend Krystal Clark who entertained the gathering with one of her favourite songs. Krystal has just returned from a tour in the South of England and is hoping to set up concerts in the Lake District.
Further highlights of the evening were the induction of two new members to the Upper Eden Club – Rotarians Neill Marsden and John Alderson who were presented with their badges and welcomed into the Club by President Philip. Then Rotarian Fred Hayllar who was recently awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for close to 25 years Active service to the Club made a short speech thanking the Club for the award.
